The alien stood by his spaceship. Elizabeth watched the alien. He was an old friend. His name was Zayn. But for now, she hadn’t revealed herself. She couldn’t show herself because she had just found out that Zayn drank human blood to rejuvenate himself. If he didn’t drink the blood, he would wither away. Wow, that was a lot to process.
He had never taken any of her blood in the past. Did that mean she could trust him? She remembered how dear he was to her. He was very short and pitch black. His eight eyes saw everything. He stood on a tail that looked like a snake’s. She knew he could slither faster than she could run. If he was now her enemy, he would catch her. As in the past, he smelled of sewage, but she put up with his stink, because he had always been kind to her. The field where he had landed was dead silent. All of the animals had fled when the alien arrived.
Elizabeth remembered his space ship. It was as beat-up as ever. As big as a house and shining silver, she’d always wondered what was inside. Now she was worried about what she might find there. While she watched, she ate a burrito that she had packed. It was incredibly hot and spicy – her favorite kind. It tasted of yummy beans, horse radish, mayonnaise and cardboard. She’d loved the taste of paper since sixth grade art class. Plus, it was high in fiber. However, for some reason she was getting a terrible tummy ache.
While she ate, she drew blood from her vein in her arm. She hoped to offer it to Zayn to keep him from hurting anyone. Luckily, she was expert at drawing blood. She had made it something of a hobby. She loved the whole experience. She loved to poke herself with a needle and pump the blood out.
Just then, a young man arrived in the field. Elizabeth had never seen him before. He was really cute with flippy blond hair and beautiful blue eyes.
At the same moment, the alien called out, “Elizabeth, I didn’t see you. What are you doing here and why didn’t you say anything?”
Elizabeth said, “I just got here.”
The stranger said, “Hey, my name’s Liam. What’s going on?”
Elizabeth was flustered. Before she could say or do anything, the alien slithered at Liam.
“No,” Elizabeth cried.
The alien yelled, “I saw how you looked at him. But you are mine.”
Oh no, Elizabeth thought. The alien was trying to kill Liam because he was jealous.
Elizabeth jumped on the alien’s back and tried to wrestle him away from Liam.
She yelled, “Zayn, I’ve drawn my blood. Take it. I want you to have it. That way, you will be saved, and no one gets hurt.”
The alien shouted, “I do not want your blood. Ever. You are my friend and precious to me. I cannot take blood from you. It could cause you to die.” Zayn bit Liam’s neck and began to drink his blood.
Liam began to struggle like a crazy man. He broke free from Zayn and ran a few steps.
Elizabeth was afraid for him when he went down on one knee. Elizabeth fought Zayn down to the ground. She pried his mouth open and forced the blood she had drawn into him. He fought her and managed to slide away.
Elizabeth ran to Liam and stood in front of him. “Go away, Zayn. Go far away . . .”
