The dragon guarded his cave. An eagle watched. Her name was Ava. Ava had no idea what the dragon guarded.
The dragon was huge. Ava thought he was almost as big as those school busses she saw when she flew around in the morning, only without the wheels. He was a dark red. He sported a lime-green, bushy, and fluffy mustache. Maroon smoke came out of his nostrils. The dragon had a long line of spikes that ran from his head to his tail. Some were tall, and some were short, but they were all shaped like triangles and were very sharp. Ava thought that despite those spikes, the dragon would actually be soft and fluffy to the touch. His skin looked like it was velvet.
The dragon stank of old dirty clothes that had sat for days without being washed. Yuck! Ava was surprised she could even stay near him given how much he reeked. However, she felt that it was her duty to stay. This might be the last dragon on Earth. She wanted to protect him.
She wished he would stop making such a racket. He was rapping very loudly and happily. Ava took another bite of the dead salmon she had been snacking on. Yumm. She loved the taste of salmon, as good as French toast.
Ava decided to introduce herself to the dragon. She swooped toward him. She sent him a telepathic message. “Hello, I come in peace. I want to protect you.”
The dragon thought back, “I don’t need no stinking help! Especially not from a silly, little eagle.”
He bent his head and Ava saw for the first time who he carried on his back. There was a beautiful woman on his back, but this woman had snakes for hair. Ava thought she looked coocoo. It had to be Medusa.
Fear ran through Ava. Those snakes were Head Snakes and they were ruthless killers and eaters of eagles. Without thought, Ava threw the rest of her salmon at the snakes. The snakes coward in fright and died on the spot. They flopped down and then like magic disintegrated. Medusa was almost completely bald.
The dragon lunged at Ava. She could tell he was furious. With all her magic, Ava pushed at the dragon. He fell on his back. Medusa was smashed underneath, all spiked to the ground.
“You stupid dragon,” Medusa yelled. “Get off of me!”
The dragon struggled to get up, but his spikes were caught. He fought to free himself. In the process, he made huge holes in the ground. The cave began to crumble. Ava now saw a huge pile of galleons of gold. She thought there had to be at least a thousand.
Ava decided to go for the gold! The cave crumbled around her. She teleported her magic to the gold then teleported herself and the gold outside.
The dragon flew at Ava. Ava flew away all the gold. The dragon chased her, breathing fire. Ava dodged the fire.
She turned to the dragon. She thought, “I want to be your friend. Here is your gold.”
Her generosity changed the dragon. He became good and they became friends.
Ava turned to her little eaglets. “That is how we became forever friends with dragons, and all the upheaval and falling rocks created a huge canyon. That is how the Grand Canyon was formed.”
The End.
