The Dragon Slayer and the Dragon

The dragon guarded her cave.  A dragon slayer named Arrowhead watched.  He wondered what she guarded.

She was a very large dragon, bigger than any he had seen.  She was as big as the cave she guarded, at least almost as big.  He thought the cave opening was big enough for her to crawl inside. Her purple and green scales shimmered in the sun. She had three horns on the top of her head, all a yard in length, and spikes going down her back, sharp triangles. Her teeth were razor-sharp and bladed, and she had huge, turquoise wings.

Mostly Arrowhead thought dragons felt sharp to the touch, but this one looked as if she would feel slimy.  She oozed slime all over her body. He thought it would be fun to touch her. She smelled as sweet as a newborn baby.  He didn’t like sweet smells. Where he grew up, bitter smells were the norm. Sweet smells gave him spasms in his arm.

The dragon was snorting just like a pig. Arrowhead could tell that she had seen him and she was warning him with her snorts to keep away. From within the cave, Arrowhead heard loud and high-pitched scratching noises. What could be making that noise? Arrowhead scooped up another spoonful of ice cream and ate it. It was bitter chocolate and tart vanilla. Eating this ice cream made him happy.

Suddenly another dragon appeared. He stomped out of the nearby forest. This dragon was a little smaller than the female currently snorting at Arrowhead. He was dark and shiny green with spikes all over his body. He charged the cave and fought to get past the female and inside. The male dragon pushed the female aside. Arrowhead could tell that the female was very upset.

He was worried about her, despite having been a dragon slayer his whole adult life. But then he remembered his code of honor – always help his brothers-in-arms. He moved forward to help the male dragon get inside. When he rushed inside the cave, he saw all sorts of broken shells.

Sitting on top of the broken shells were multi-colored baby dragons. They were spotted with all the colors of the rainbow. The male dragon stopped in his tracks. Arrowhead contemplated slaying the baby dragons, but then decided to let them grow up. If he saw them again, then he might slay them.

The baby dragons were crying for their mother. The male dragon gathered the little babies in his arms and stomped past Arrowhead toward the female the dragon. Arrowhead followed. Arrowhead knew that it was time to get busy being the dragon slayer that he was supposed to be. He had a plan.

When the adult dragons were busy taking care of the babies and not paying attention, he would pull out his bow and arrow and shoot both adults in the back. Arrowhead waited until the female was feeding her dragon babies. Then he jumped out of the cave and shot both adult dragons in the back. Normally this meant certain death for dragons, but this time the arrows were repelled and fell to the ground.  Arrowhead couldn’t believe it.

The dragons must have very special scales. The dragons realized their danger and grabbed the babies. As they flapped their wings and lifted into the sky, Arrowhead lunged for the female dragon and latched onto her tail. He was determined to slay the dragons….
