The Ant and the Dragon

The dragon guarded his cave. Tan, the ant, watched. Tan was microscopic in size but she made up for that by being magical. Tan wondered what the dragon guarded.

The dragon was humongous. He was a shiny gold, just like metal. The dragon’s wings were open, spread wide and very large. They were black. He had a strong and spiky tail that he wacked against the ground, causing the ground to shake and Tan to jump in the air. Tan thought the dragon would have smooth skin despite all the bumps. She also imagined that the dragon would be warm to the touch.

The dragon stunk of sour pickles. Tan hated that smell. It made her want her run far away but she resisted. She would be brave. She could be brave even though the dragon was growling very loudly, sounding just like a bomb going off. From within the cave came the sounds of jars being opened and funny tinkling of metal hitting metal. She didn’t know what the noise was but if she had to guess, it would be that someone was working in a cave kitchen. Another dragon?

Suddenly a huge sandwich bulleted out of the cave and hit the dragon in his face. He grabbed it with one claw and took a giant bite. A small piece fell to the ground. Tan was so hungry that the ooey-gooey meaty sandwich looked as if it would taste like paradise. Yumm!

Suddenly there was a deafening crack! OMG, thought Tan, what was that? Tan was too hungry to worry about the noise.  She rushed for the piece of sandwich lying on the ground and took a microscopic bit. Oh heaven!

Just then the dragon looked down, saw the piece of sandwich and picked it up with Tan on it! She floated in the air. She clung to the meat she was currently nibbling.

Then the dragon saw Tan. Wow, he must have amazing eyesight.

He roared, “My name is Smaug!”

Tan was shocked! This was the evil dragon Smaug that she had always heard so many tales about! Tan pulled in all her magic and flew off the meat away from Smaug.

From high in the sky a griffon dived and grabbed Tan. Oh, joy! It was Bubbalubbabubba, her bestest buddy griffon.

But then she slipped out of the griffon paw and plummeted to the ground. The griffon raced to save her. Tan was surprised because despite the huge fall, she didn’t feel injured at all.

Then Smaug went after them, but he caught his wing on a rock, which made him trip and fall into the cave. Tan and Bubbalubbabubba heard a heap of noise – loud cracks and smashes and huge sounds of glass breaking,

Tan said to Bubbalubbabubba, “Let’s go see what happened. Maybe we’ll also see Smaug’s famous treasure.”

Together they flew into the cave.  They saw a very cracked and smashed egg as well as another dragon and a completely messed-up kitchen.

Tan cried, “Look at the baby dragon. Wow, it looks scary!” Tan fainted.

Tan slowly woke up. She felt very sleepy. She looked around and realized she was home. And there was the griffon hovering over her.

Behind the griffon, Smaug approached. He must have followed them home.

Oh no, Tan thought. She was sure he wanted to eat her. Then in the far corner of the room she saw the baby dragon!

She quickly turned to the griffon and asked, “Why is the baby dragon here?”

“She was afraid of her parents,” the griffon said.

Smaug made a great leap out of the window and plunked down on the roof of her anthill home.  Tan was terrified.  What would happen next?

The “Cliffhanger” End.
