The Dragons and the Brothers

The dragon guarded his cave.  The brothers, Sam, aged 13, and Dillon, aged 10, watched.  They had just sneaked out of their house to the cave and were completely shocked to find a dragon.

“What if the dragon was guarding a hoard of treasure? “ Sam whispered to Dillon.

Dillon could not believe how big this dragon was—as big as his 5th grade classroom—and his wicked tail was at least half that size.  The dragon was the darkest shade of green with rough scales all over his body, spikes around his head and a super sharp horn on top of his head.  His eyes were dark red and he was breathing bright blue fire.  The scales looked as rough as sandpaper, and those spikes looked as if they could skewer someone.  Strangely, the dragon smelled just like pumpkin cupcakes all cinnamony and nutmeggy.  Wow, that was a yummy scent!
As the dragon flamed the fire, he made a hissing sound.  Dillon noticed that the dragon was eating something.  He realized that it was a giant pumpkin cupcake without frosting.  Then the dragon shifted and revealed a huge pile of cupcakes.  There had to be a million cupcakes!  They towered over the cave in a great heap.  No wonder the dragon smelled like pumpkin cupcakes!  Dillon loved pumpkin cupcakes.  To him they tasted pumpkiny, of course, but also a little sour.

Dillon turned to his brother.  “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” he whispered.

Sam grinned, “If you are thinking that we should go inside the cave to see if there is a hoard of treasure, then YES!”
They came up with a plan.  Quickly they disguised themselves as bushes using branches and leaves nearby.  Then they crept toward the cave.  Halfway there, they stopped and watched to see if the dragon had noticed the crawling bushes.

The dragon was oblivious.

“Whew!”  Sam whispered, “I’ll distract the dragon while you sneak inside the cave.”

Sam moved away from Dillon’s bush and when he was far enough so that the dragon wouldn’t notice, Dillon began to dance the Macarena!  The dragon went completely still and stared, his big red eyes going all bulgy.  That was Dillon’s cue to run.  Dillon raced to the cave entrance.  It was little hard to run with his bush disguise.

As he ran inside, he was greeted by a mother dragon and three baby dragons sitting on a nest.  Oh, no! he thought.  This was not good!  The mother dragon roared.  Uh–oh, he had definitely made her mad!  The baby dragons looked angry too.  They were stomping and roaring themselves!

Suddenly, Sam arrived at the cave entrance.  “Dillon, we have to get out of here!”  He yanked on Dillon’s arm.  “Mom and Dad are here, and they are mad!”

Dillon heard his mom yell, “DILLON, SAM, YOU ARE IN SO MUCH TROUBLE!  When we get home, you are grounded for life!”

“Mom,” Dillon said, “if you haven’t noticed, we’re in a dragon’s cave!”

He saw his mom at the cave entrance.  She finally noticed the dragons and boy did she freak out!  “RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!” she yelled.  And she ran.

Their dad yelled, “you get out of there right now!”

Dillon refused, and Sam stayed next to him.  “We need to see if there is treasure!”  Sam cried.

All the dragons surrounded the boys and breathed fire at them; even the babies breathed puffs of flame.  The boys realized this was getting a little too hot and scary, so they ran.

“Let’s try the top of the cave,” Sam yelled.

Dillon and Sam jumped and grabbed rocks and began rock climbing up the side.

Sam whispered, “The dragons seem to have terrible vision unless they are really close.  I don’t think they will see us.”

Their dad quickly disguised himself as a rock and followed.  Then one of the baby dragons started climbing.  Dillon saw him and realized that he must have seen their dad.

The other baby dragons cried in very high voices, “Steve!”

That had to be the little dragon’s name.  The boys reached the top.  There was a large hole that allowed them to peek inside.  They saw mounds and mounds and mounds of treasure.

“Awesome!” they both yelled.

The “Cliffhanger” End.
