Astrue, the Teen, and the Dragon

The dragon guarded his cave. Astrue, the thirteen-year-old boy watched. He wondered what the dragon guarded.  For that matter, he wondered how a dragon could be here at all. He’d seen this dragon before but it still surprised him.

The dragon was huge, about the size of a house. That made him a little nervous. What if he got trampled? The dragon had huge curved fangs with little spikes all over. He looked as if he was made of ice and even could breathe ice. He was silvery with ice tints. He had quite a long tail that was thick at the beginning and then thinned out at the end. It had icicles all over but in a pattern. Each group of three were in the shape of a half star. He had big bat wings. They had a layer of light blue, then a layer of darker blue, and then a thin layer of ice. A few inches from his claws, on each side, there was a large, curved spike. He had three claws on each paw, and they were long and sharp.

Astrue thought the dragon would feel as hard as a rock and would be so cold to the touch that Astrue’s finger would stick to the skin. The dragon smelled like smoke. Astrue didn’t like that smell. He plugged up his nose so he wouldn’t have to smell it. Every so often, the dragon roared. Not loud enough to reach the city, but it did echo in this canyon. Astrue thought the dragon was communicating with other dragons. He thought he saw one in the mist that hovered in the canyon. It made him a little more nervous to imagine more dragons surrounding him, but he still was more interested than scared. From within the cave came a chorus of growls. What could be making that noise?

Astrue took another spoonful of vanilla ice cream. It was creamy, cold, and sweet. He liked it but wished it was chocolate. Still he was hungry and he need a snack. Then a clump of ice cream landed on his shirt. Oh  no. He had to get cleaned up. He went back to his house, but when he arrived there was a very large dragon blocking the front door. This was an even bigger dragon—the size of a hotel. It was bright red and it breathed fire. This dragon was really scary.

He decided to sneak around to the back. He snuck inside. The place was a wreck. Someone had torn it apart looking or something. He had a feeling he knew what that was. A long time ago, dragons lived nearby in a peaceful village. His ancestors stole treasure—a very important medallion—from those dragons. He had a feeling they wanted it back. Astrue went over to the window and peeked outside. The very large dragon looked confused—as if he didn’t know what to do next. He seemed to look all around the house, then he flew away. Astrue ran over to the couch. He pushed it away from the wall. There was a small box. He grabbed a little key under the box and opened it. It was empty! No medallion! Oh no!

He ran outside and kept running until he was back at the cave. The ice dragon was gone! He ran into the cave. It was well lit with torches. He saw three kid dragons, and they were playing with the medallion! Each was throwing it up in the air and catching it.

The kid dragons saw him. They growled. One grabbed the medallion, and they all stomped off deeper into the cave.  Astrue ran after the little dragons. He ran into a different chamber of the cave. The kid dragons had disappeared.  Where did the kid dragons go?
