The Dragon’s Lair

The dragon guarded his cave. Charles, the archer, watched. Charles knew that the dragon guarded a mountain of golden jewels.

The dragon was monstrously huge and a dull red.  He had spikes all over his body. He was a wingless dragon, but he thought maybe the dragon could still float in the air. He had bumps running down his back. Charles had seen him breathe fire, but he wasn’t right now. Charles had touched the dragon before. He had snuck up on him while he was sleeping. The dragon’s scales were very rough and they were scorching hot. When he had touched the tip of one of the spikes, it had poked him like a very sharp needle.

The dragon smelled dirty like he hadn’t bathed for two weeks. Charles wrinkled his nose at the icky smell.
The dragon had been roaring at Charles for quite a while. He could tell the dragon was angry, probably because Charles had snuck up on him. The dragon had just woken up, and Charles had quickly hid behind some boulders.

He heard crying from the cave. They were the baby dragons!  He had seen them sitting next to the mountain of jewels when he had peeked into the cave. Back then, they were having fun playing games, but now they were crying for their father.

Suddenly a unicorn walked by Charles. He was munching on an elf. Oh gross, thought Charles. That was disgusting. He thought eating an elf would be like eating dirt. It made him want to throw up.

Charles was determined to steal the dragon’s babies. He was lonely so he wanted to raise them on his own.
First he made a copy of himself using dirt, and he thought the sculpture looked very real. He hoped that would distract the dragon. Slowly he crept close.  But the dragon wasn’t fooled, and he wacked him with the tail. Charles flew back and landed on his sculpture. Charles scrambled for the boulders, but the dragon quickly moved and captured him between his legs. Charles used his bow and arrow, and the arrow hit the dragon in his arm. That distracted the dragon enough for Charles to be able to run away.

He ran toward the nearby forest and hid behind a tree. The dragon breathed blue flames that torched the tree. Charles ran again. This time he made it to the cave. He snatched a baby dragon. When the dragon appeared at the cave entrance, Charles used the baby dragon to defend himself. Charles was terrified, so terrified he couldn’t say a word. He grabbed a second baby dragon.

The dragon yelled “Please let my babies go! You can have my mountain of golden jewels instead.”

It took Charles a moment to decide. He really wanted baby dragons. However, he was very poor. A mountain of jewels would come in handy.

“I accept the offer,” he said.

Charles dropped the babies and moved toward the jewels. Just then the dragon swung his tail and knocked Charles to the ground.

“I will not give you my babies or my jewels. You are not worthy,” said the dragon.

Oh no, thought Charles. He’d been fooled.

There was the sound of hooves and a unicorn exploded into the cave. The unicorn picked up Charles with his horn and galloped out of the cave. He ran all the way to the unicorn village before dropping Charles to the ground.  As soon as he hit the dirt, he ran as fast as he could. He was grateful to the unicorn, but he thought it was creepy.

He went to the neighboring forest.  Suddenly, there was a huge roar in the sky. It was the dragon floating up above.  The dragon torched the trees and Charles ran.  He ran fast, but then he had to come to a screeching halt.  He stared down a bottomless cliff.  There was nowhere else to go. All of a sudden, a second dragon appeared. Charles thought it was the mother. She opened her mouth and blew a torrent of water into the canyon.  The baby dragons appeared and blew rocks into the canyon.  Now there was a lot of water and dangerous rocks.  Charles had no choice but to jump.  As he fell, he prayed that the water would save him.
