The dragon guarded his cave. Titi, the owl, watched. It was Glump. She’d met that dragon before. She wondered what Glum was guarding.
Glump was bigger than Titi, but not a huge dragon by any means. He was about three times as big as she was. He was neon blue–very bright, but his wings were clear. He had no tail. Titi knew that he had been born that way. She also was very much aware that he breathed ice.
He had sharp, triangular spikes running down his back. The dragon had rough, lizard-like skin – not soft like Titi’s feathers. Glump smelled super stinky, like bird poop.
Suddenly Glump began to run in fast circles as if he was chasing his non-existent tail. The made his stinky smell even stronger. Titi wrinkled her beak. As Glump ran in circles, he snapped at his bottom as if he was trying to bite his tail that didn’t exist. He made constant snapping noises as he ran.
From within the cave came hard thumping noises. What could be making such a racket? All of a sudden, the dragon came to a halt.
He grabbed a donut and started to munch on it. Titi had never eaten a donut, but she’d seen them before and she was quite sure they tasted icky. All sugary and bland. No taste at all. How gross!
Titi could no longer hold onto her curiosity. She had to know what was inside that cave. With the dragon distracted by his snack, she swooped and zipped into the cave. The cave was very bright, but with her keen eyesight she made out a narrow hall that ended in two separate paths. Which should she choose?
From one path she heard loud thumping. From the other she heard loud water. Hmmm. She decided to investigate the path with the water first. She thought it was very curious that there would be so much running water given how cold and snowy it was outside the cave. She flew toward the water.
Oh my! She saw a large, yellow, three-headed sea serpent splashing in a river of water. It was bigger than Glump. It saw her and let out a loud, screeching roar. Titi felt afraid. She zipped back to the cave’s hall and hid way up high over the cave’s ceiling.
Soon Titi realized that the serpent was swimming away, deeper into the cave. As the sound of the swimming serpent receded, Titi found her courage. She flew stealthily back toward the river. The serpent was gone but in its place was a little baby dragon–a carbon copy of Glump, only very small. That must be what Glump was guarding. She wanted to tell all her friends. When she heard the sound of the serpent swimming back towards them, she decided to tell her friends now!
She flew to the cave entrance, but just as she got there, the dragon showed up. He seemed mad. He rushed toward her but scraped against the wall. Purple blood dripped from his wound. She rushed past him. But then she paused. She couldn’t leave without knowing what was down the second path. With the dragon injured, she flew past him and down the other path.
She was tired. She decided to walk. She walked and walked and suddenly there was a giant diamond in her path. She realized that the thumping was rocks falling to the ground. She grabbed the diamond with her talons and took to the air to avoid the rocks, but one barely hit her and caused her to fall onto a water slide that twisted and turned and brought her to land directly in front of the dragon, Glump!
Ack!
And Glump was glaring at her. He was mad. He opened his mouth and breathed ice at her. Oh no! She felt as if she’d been turned into a popsicle! Even worse, the ice flame made the diamond explode. All this for a fake diamond?! What a bummer. Would she ever see her owl friends again?
The “Cliffhanger” End.
