The dragon guarded her cave. Johnny, the bounty hunter watched. Another man walked up.
“Hey! My name is Bob. I’m a bounty hunter and that’s my prey.”
“Uh, no,” said Johnny. “As a matter of fact, I got here first. She’s mine.” There was no way he was going to let Bob push his way into this catch. Johnny couldn’t wait to capture the dragon and see what was inside the cave. He hoped it was lots of gold!
The dragon was huge, at least ten times bigger than he was. She was neon green, but her large wings were neon blue. She had no horns on the top of her head. The dragon’s eyes were completely white, with no pupils at all. Was she blind? If so, it would be easy to catch her. She had thin, big spikes running down her back that looked very sharp. Her scales were rough and bumpy.
When he sniffed the air, the dragon smelled like rotten eggs. Yuck.
Bob whispered to Johnny, “Man, that dragon smells good! I just love to eat rotten eggs.”
Gross! Bob was disgusting. The dragon had been growling ever since Johnny arrived. He thought she might be growling at him. He wasn’t sure since she seemed blind, but maybe she could sense his presence as well as Bob’s.
Suddenly, Johnny also heard noise coming from the cave. He heard loud cracks. He thought it might be chunks of gold falling off a mountain of gold. He rubbed his hands together in anticipation.
Suddenly, the dragon stopped growling. She also stopped vibrating. She lifted a ginormous ice cream sandwich from behind her and started to eat it. Yum! That looked so sweet. Johnny realized that the growling was actually the sound she made when she was making ice cream. Maybe she didn’t know he was there after all.
Then, as soon as she finished eating, she took flight and quickly disappeared from sight. Wow! It was a perfect time to visit the cave. He strode forward, but Bob grabbed him by the arm.
“I don’t know about this,” Bob said nervously. “Do you think we should really do this?”
Johnny shrugged out of Bob’s hold. “Of course I’m going inside. Don’t be ridiculous.” He marched into the cave. Bob did not follow.
The cave was pitch black. Even once Johnny’s eyes adjusted, all he saw was black. He heard the cracking closer now. He slowly moved in the direction of the noise. Fortunately, a little bit of light emanated from a far off tunnel. He decided to follow it. The cracking noise grew louder. When he entered the tunnel he saw 10 ten-foot tall eggs lined up. They were hatching and the creatures coming from the eggs glowed neon yellow. They were the source of the light. Even though they were yellow creatures of light, he just knew they must be the dragon’s babies. He wondered why the dragon left just when her babies were being born. Did she expect them to fly after her? He also had the realization that the dragon was not guarding gold. That made him sad.
Suddenly, Johnny heard a loud thump and then ever nearing stomps! It must be the dragon. He whipped around and pulled out his sword. The dragon arrived in the tunnel. She had a giant great white shark in her mouth. Even though her eyes looked blind, it was obvious she could see him.
She dropped her shark and cried, “Thank you for protecting my babies!”
Johnny felt amazing. At this moment, when the dragon believed him to be good and noble, to be protecting her little ones (who were huge), Johnny wanted to be exactly who she believed him to be. He no longer wanted to capture her for money. He wanted both her and her babies to be safe.
He said to the dragon, “I will always protect your babies!”
They walked out of the cave together, Johnny, the dragon, and all ten of her babies. Bob, was standing near the entrance. When he saw them, he screamed like a baby. He turned and ran as fast as he could. They never saw him again. They lived happily ever after.
The End.
