Just One Day at the Beach

Bob was a six year old boy, but he felt a lot older.  He had to survive every day homeless on the streets of Compton.

All he ever dreamed of was to go see the Pacific Ocean, to sit in the sand and just for once not have to worry about anything. As he walked down the street imagining himself at the beach he saw a bucket, not a sand bucket but a KFC bucket. It reeked of chili sauce and it was super greasy and wet. But he picked it up anyway, because it helped him imagine playing on the beach and making sand castles.

He saw a small piece of chicken still in the bottom of the bucket. He knew it probably wasn’t a good idea to eat it, but he was starving. It had to be better than eating dirt. He stuffed the piece of chicken into his mouth and chewed. He tried to picture the dirt on the chicken as sand, as if he was at a picnic on the beach.

On the side of the bucket it said, “Eat chicken everyday.”

All of a sudden there was an EEeEeEeEeEeeEeEeeeeeeeEeeeEeEeeEeEeeeeee screeching noise. Different wonderful visions crowded him. He saw Esme’s trap house, an ice cream parlor, a KFC.

Then he fell to the ground, and the ground was sand!

He looked up, and saw the ocean. How can this be?

He felt all sorts of emotions at once. He felt so happy and lucky as if he was swimming in a pool of Kool-aid, but he also felt scared. How had he come to this place?

He stared at the bucket in his hands. Was this KFC bucket a weird, magical object? Or was he dreaming? How could he tell?

He smacked himself with the bucket. It hurt. Did that mean this was real?

Using his finger he spelled ‘YEET” in the sand. Then he ran to the surf and jumped into the ocean.

The ocean was very heavy. It dragged at its clothes. Water got into his mouth. It was disgusting, all salty. He had never imagined that the ocean could taste this way. He began to grin, and then he laughed.

THIS WAS REAL!!!!
