The dragon guarded his cave. Agent Salamander watched. She knew that the dragon guarded a gold egg. She wondered what kind of creature would be hatched from a gold egg.
The dragon was huge. Agent Salamander was an unusually large salamander. She was as big as a human. This dragon was as big as a classroom! He was light blue with white polka dots. His wings had to be as large and tall as the Empire State Building. They seemed to go on forever. He had spikes all the way down his spine to the tip of his tail. His scales looked as if they would be very hard and his spikes seemed as sharp as a knife.
Agent Salamander sniffed the air. The dragon smelled of moldy cheese. “Ahhhh… What a delight,” she thought. She loved that smell.
The dragon was roaring, but Agent Salamander had the feeling that it was his way of singing. She did not think he had seen her. She was very stealthy. She also heard growling. At first, she thought it came from the cave, but then she realized that it was coming from the dragon’s throat. She wondered if it was a growl of impatience because the egg had not yet hatched. The smell of moldy cheese made Agent Salamander very hungry. Fortunately, her house was nearby.
Quickly, she slithered to the house, much faster than a normal salamander. There, she found a stash of moldy cheese. It reminded her of eating rats, one of her favorite foods. To her, moldy cheese was as yummy as a piece of cake. As soon as she was done, she went back to her observation point where she had been spying on the dragon.
Agent Salamander saw that the dragon had taken to the sky and was circling over the nearby forest. Agent Salamander realized that this was her opportunity to rush inside the cave and steal the gold egg. She snuck into the cave and found that it was well lit. The sun shone through a hole in the cave’s ceiling, and its rays hit the gold egg, which caused a burst of light that filled the cavernous space!
She sidled up to the egg and, rising onto her hind feet, began to roll it out of the cave. She made it to the cave’s entrance. There was a great shadow in the sky. She looked up and saw the dragon staring at her. With a menacing whoosh of his wings, the dragon dive-bombed her.
Quickly, she grabbed the egg and tucked it under her front leg. Then she scurried back into the cave and up the wall. When she reached the ceiling, she made for the hole and poked her head out. She didn’t see the dragon, but, suddenly, she heard him lumber into the cave. Then she felt sharp teeth on her tail.
Oh, no! she thought.
She pulled herself through the opening and felt her tail pop off. She felt very sad. She loved that tail. Then she realized something sadder. She had lost the egg. It must have fallen back through the hole when she was dragging herself away from the dragon. She saw another small hole and followed it back into the cave. Immediately, she saw the egg. It was up against the wall.
While the dragon tried to find her through the hole in the top of the cave, she snuck quietly to the egg. It was cracked! Something was trying to get out. It was a gold and light blue, baby bird.
She helped it hatch and then began to carry it home. They managed to arrive safely at home. As Agent Salamander was settling the baby down for a nap, she heard a great roar.
The dragon yelled, “I AM DRAKE THE DRAGON, AND YOU HAVE MY BABY!”
Agent Salamander looked at the baby in surprise. It sure looked like a bird. It must be half-dragon, half-bird. Suddenly, the dragon shot through the roof and tore the house apart.
“I’m so sorry,” said Agent Salamander. “I just wanted to know what was inside the egg, and I wanted to protect the baby. I thought it was a bird.”
“It’s okay. I can see that you were trying to do good. Let’s be friends. I shall name my baby, Spike, and you may be his godmother.”
The End.
