The dragon guarded her cave. The slug named Infernus watched.
The dragon was huge. Infernus had visited a human classroom in Santa Clara and that was exactly how big this dragon was! She was ginormous! She was pure black. Just a few minutes ago, Infernus had witnessed her breathing a strange purple acid that burned a new hole in the cave.
Infernus thought this was a very mean dragon. He had seen her stomp on a little bug who had tried to enter the cave. The dragon’s arms were covered with spikes. Her wings were spread. For such a big dragon, her wings were just medium-sized. They were also black.
The slug thought it would feel very weird to touch this dragon but he also didn’t think it would hurt. Infernus thought that the dragon’s scales would feel very rough on his soft and slimy belly. Suddenly, the dragon went back into her cave. Infernus snuck up to the entrance. For a slug, he was pretty fast.
Just as he arrived he heard a voice say, “Popadoodle, will you please lay some more eggs?”
Infernus realized three things. First, that there were two dragons. Second, one was named Popadoodle. Finally, he also knew that there were dragon eggs.
The two dragons reeked of strawberries. It was as if Infernus sat in a strawberry patch. Infernus didn’t love the smell but he didn’t hate it either.
Infernus peeked inside the cave. He saw two dragons, Popadoodle and her husband, who was double her size. He also saw a gold nest of dragon eggs.
The male dragon was slapping his tail against the ground – smack, smack, smack. Each time he smacked his tail, Infernus was thrown into the air as if he was jumping. Also, as the tail thumped, the eggs started to rattle and even crack! They were starting to hatch!
Infernus took a bite out of his favorite snack – a green leaf. It tasted sooo sweet. Yum! Infernus wanted the gold nest. It looked like a lot of gold. It would make him rich! He wanted to be rich! He didn’t know why. He just knew that he would be very happy if her were rich!
Quickly, he got a military plane. He flew inside the cave and using the plane’s powerful suction cup, flung the eggs that were hatching at the dragons. While they were distracted by their eggs, he nabbed the gold nest with the plane’s suction and shot out of the cave like a chicken-bellied freak. As he flew he checked behind. There was no one following him. The sky was empty.
Suddenly, a spiky arm shot through the plane’s window! Whoa, thought Infernus. How was this possible? Did the dragons have the power of invisibility? Infernus ducked away from the arm.
That was when he noticed something blue and green behind the nest. It was Aqua Beak – his friend!
He yelled to his friend, “Jump with me!” They grabbed the nest and jumped out of the plane.
They landed in water, but the nest fell on the land. Infernus felt as if he was drowning. He saw the dragons taking the nest away. Suddenly, he was pulled out of the water by one of the dragons. The other was saving Aqua Beak who had transformed into a fish.
“Why did you steal our nest?” Popadoodle asked.
“I don’t know,” cried Infernus.
He wasn’t going to tell the truth in case they got mad. He was very grateful to be saved.
