The Blue Bird and the Dragon

The dragon guarded her cave. A blue bird watched. His name was Jay. He wondered what the dragon guarded. He was determined to find out.

The dragon was at least one hundred times bigger than Jay. She had three heads and a split tail. She was so gorgeous. She had every color imaginable – her skin was a tie-dye swirl of colors. The dragon was very pointy. Her wings were pointy, her horns were super pointy and each of the tips of her tail ended in a pointy arrow. Even her tummy was covered in pointy spikes. Jay thought those pointy spikes could cause little holes in him, but he thought the dragon’s scales would be much softer.

The dragon smelled awesome. She smelled like mint chip ice cream. He loved that scent. He also loved to eat that ice cream – so sweet and crunchy.

The dragon was growling. It sounded as if she were crunching bones. No sound came from the cave.

Jay decided that it was time to discover what lay inside. He was not afraid of that dragon. She might be huge, but Jay was fast and he was small enough to go undetected. He flew straight past that silly dragon into the cave.

The cave was pitch black but in the far reaches, lights flickered and flashed. There seemed to be ten distinct lights in this light show. So much water dripped from the ceiling that Jay had a hard time flying. He landed. He would walk instead.

There were two paths, one to the left and one to the right. The left was very dark and the right was brightly lit. He chose the right. Lights still flashed in the distance. He walked for a long time.

Suddenly the ground gave way and he fell. Booby trap!

After a long time, he landed hard, but he wasn’t badly injured. He got up and explored. He was stuck in a small space with nowhere to escape. He decided to attempt flight. At first, it looked as if he would make it to the top, but then lava started to flow into the hole. He zoomed back down and crawled into a tiny, secret hole at the bottom. He waited for the lava flow to stop.

When it was done, he crawled out and flew over the lava to the top of the trap. It was very hot. He almost gave up. Once he made it, he saw more lava racing toward him from the back of the cave. He ran as fast as he could to the front and dived into the second path that was on the left. It was still very dark.

And suddenly there was more lava! Oh no.

But on this side, there was a lot less dripping water. He took flight, determined to make it to the flashing lights. He made it far enough to see that the huge dragon was now inside the cave. She must have arrived while Jay was stuck in the booby trap. She was guarding ten baby dragons.

Aha! That was what she guarded.

She flicked her tail and hit him. He went flying backward and not on purpose.

He zipped out of the cave. He recruited all of his friends. The blue birds put their wings together to form an amazing giant bird. They went back into the cave. They flew under the dragon’s legs and were able to see all the baby dragons.

Jay really wanted these babies. Who wouldn’t want baby dragons for their own? They would become the birds’ children and the birds would never be lonely again. The dragon flicked her tail again and sent the giant blue jay bird flying.

She yelled, “Why are you here? Why are you trying to steal my babies?”

Jay said, “We are lonely; we need them to be our babies.”

“No, that will not do,” the dragon said. “They are mine. But you may visit them anytime as long as I am here. Then you will not be lonely.”

The birds cheered. It was a very happy ending.

The End.
