Billy the Mouse and the Dragon

The dragon guarded his cave.  Billy, the mouse, watched.  He wished he knew what the dragon guarded.  He had never seen the dragon or the cave before. What a mystery!

The dragon was about an inch taller than Billy, who was a normal-sized mouse. The dragon was green, a neon green that blended with a dark green. The dragon had wings that were currently open as if he might fly away at any second. He was very scaly, but his scales didn’t look as hard as Billy might have imagined dragon scales could be. The dragon had turquoise eyes. Billy thought they were very interesting. They were so different from Billy’s orange eyes.

The dragon moved slightly and Billy saw more scales, but these were fluffy. The fluffy scales were on the dragon’s tummy, his back, and his tail.

Aha! No wonder the dragon was so small. It was a baby dragon.

The dragon smelled delicious. Just like a trash can. Ohhh, how Billy loved that smell! It made him hungry! So very hungry!!! The little dragon was breathing a trickle of fire, which sounded like a tiny roar. In between trickles of fire, the dragon ate a tomato. Ick. Billy thought tomatoes were disgusting. He had tried one he’d found in a trash can once, and its insides were sticky and gooey. He did not like them.

Billy pulled out his magical coin, which he always kept in his trusty backpack. He rubbed the coin three times and poof! He was invisible!  He snuck past the dragon into the cave. It was very dark!

As his eyes adjusted, he saw the strangest thing. A trail of potato crumbs! Each crumb was almost as big as Billy. If he had to guess, these came from a giant potato! He shivered. He did not think he wanted to see whatever monster might have attacked such a huge potato.

He searched for another path. He couldn’t find one. So he scurried up the wall of the cave. He found a small hole at the top and squeezed through.

On top of the cave, there were even more potato crumbs! Whoever was inside this cave was too dangerous.

Billy pulled out some explosives and snuck down to the cave entrance. Still invisible, he set the explosion. The cave rocks tumbled down and covered the entrance. One landed on the dragon’s tail. The dragon screamed loudly and for a very long time.

Then he keeled over in a faint!

Billy thought he must have destroyed whatever monster was in the cave.  He also saw that he was no longer invisible. Still, he decided to be brave and enter the cave again. He snuck in through a tiny hole.

On the other side there were twenty full- grown dragons! They were black as night. Darn! His plan didn’t work. The dragons menaced. They loomed. They began to stomp closer.

Billy whipped out more explosives and set them.  He lit the fuse. And then he ran.

Would it work? Would he destroy those dragons? Who knew? But Billy sure hoped so! To be continued…

The “Cliffhanger” End.
