The dragon guarded her cave. Roar the Lion watched. His coyote friend had told him that the fox he had hunted for many moons was in that cave – guarded by the dragon!
The dragon was huge, at least six times as big as Roar. She had greenish-blue scales all over and spikes running down her spine. The scales looked rough and the spikes looked very sharp. The dragon smelled wonderful – just like stinky socks! What a lovely aroma! The dragon purred just like a silly house cat, but Roar thought the purr sounded angry, not sweet.
He didn’t think the dragon had seen him yet. He just thought the dragon must always be angry.
The dragon chomped down on a carcass next to her. It was a lion! Roar recognized that lion as being from a rival pack. Yay! He was happy that the pack had diminished by one! Roar surprised himself by actually thinking that a lion might taste yummy, just like ice cream. Weird!
Roar had a plan. He would use his magic wand wand to shoot a spark of fire away from the cave. He expected the dragon to investigate, and while she was gone, he would sneak into the cave. He put his plan into action.
But – Oh no! The dragon did not move at all!
Then, the dragon charged at Roar.
Uh-oh! Roar dodged her. He slashed at her, and she fell over, whimpering. She stayed down.
Roar raced into the cave! Finally, he would get that fox! But he didn’t see a fox, he saw a heap of stinky socks!
Ah ha! That’s why the dragon smelled like stinky socks. Ahhhh! Roar dived into the pile and rolled and rolled and then fell asleep.
Suddenly, he was in a world of stinky socks, and then there was a pool of stinky-sock water. He dived into the water using a floaty filled with stinky socks. He floated and floated and…
WOKE UP!
Whoa! What a dream that was! Uh-oh! While he was asleep the dragon had arrived in the cave. He crawled deeper into the pile of stinky socks. He hoped the dragon wouldn’t see him. Then Roar raised his wand and cast a spell
Suddenly the dragon was a living, breathing pile of stinky socks.
Roar saw something that made him very sad. Now that the dragon was a pile of stinky socks, she was see-through in spots, and Roar could see that she had already eaten the fox! It scurried around in her stinky-sock belly!
Suddenly, the fox jumped out through a hole in the dragon.
“Oh lion,” the fox said, “Thank you for saving me from Fire the Dragon. Let’s be BFFs!”
The lion had to agree because the fox was so sweet.
Then, a stinky sock landed in his mouth.
“Yum”, he said as he chewed. “I love this sweet and salty delight. I must have more.” He waved his wand and turned the fox into a stinky sock fox. “Sorry, but I must eat you.”
The fox ran. Leo chased. He saw wet prints from the wet and stinky socks.
Ah ha! he thought. The chase is on.
