The dragon guarded his cave. Prince Kevin watched. He’d heard of this dragon but had never seen him before. He’d heard that the dragon was terribly scary and would eat humans if crossed. Prince Kevin wondered what the dragon guarded.
The dragon was as big as a dinosaur–HUGE! And he was neon red. He had two neon orange horns, and neon orange scales ran down his spine.
Prince Kevin thought that if he touched the dragon it would feel like hard snow. The dragon looked so cold. But he smelled like smoke. Prince Kevin did not like that smell. To him smoke equaled danger. He wondered if this was a fire-breathing dragon.
Suddenly the dragon roared and in a growling low voice said, “Back off of my territory!”
Whoa! The dragon could speak–but in a very strange dark voice! What did that mean? Was the dragon cursed?
Clearly the dragon had spotted Kevin. He stomped right up to the tree that Kevin hid behind. Then he chomped the tree and chewed it up!
Hmm. Kevin thought the tree might taste like roots. He liked carrots. Maybe a tree tasted good–like carrots.
His next thought was: Ahhh!
The dragon stood over him, glaring and breathing bright red fire. Prince Kevin zigzagged as fast as he could to avoid the dragon’s terrible fire. He dived behind a bush. He needed a plan. He was determined to get into that cave and find out what the horrible dragon guarded. He pulled out his sword. It was very special. If he pressed a button, it would burst into flames. He’d been told by survivors of the dragon that the fire might even be able to melt the dragon’s cold skin. He would scare the dragon away from the cave.
Taking a deep breath, he leapt up and ran at the dragon with his fiery sword. The dragon touched the flaming sword with his talon and poof the fire went out.
Oops! Uh-oh! Kevin ran to a boulder and hid behind. That did not work! He spied an empty barrel. Ah-hah! He slid inside, aimed for the cave entrance, and rolled. He rolled all the way in without the dragon stopping him. Then he crawled out.
It was pitch dark. As his eyes adjusted, he saw a huge mound of gold. Ooo! He began to stuff gold in his sack. He would steal it.
Suddenly someone said, “What do you think you’re doing?”
He swung around. No one was there. He looked this way and that and saw…
A unicorn! Wow! He did not see that coming! He walked up to the unicorn and petted it.
Suddenly a vampire arrived and yelled, “Gurnett!”
The dragon stomped into the cave. So that was the dragon’s name!
“You fool,” yelled the vampire. “I cursed you to protect me, and you’ve let this teenager into my cave.”
Kevin brandished his sword at the vampire. “You’ve cursed this dragon and I can not allow it.”
He fought the vampire.
The vampire cried out, “I’m afraid of fire!”
Soon Kevin had tied him up. He turned to Gurnett. “Curse-be-gone!”
The dragon was freed!
They became best buddies and lived happily ever after with the unicorn as their pet!
