The Dragon and the Demi-God

The dragon guarded his cave. Deadly, the demi-god watched. Deadly knew there was a magical portal in the cave that could bring you to any world, but he wasn’t sure if the dragon knew. So why was the dragon guarding the cave?

The dragon was big but not enormous. Deadly was about six feet tall and the dragon was ten. Strangely, when Deadly first arrived at the cave, the dragon was green. But now, the dragon was red. He was also snorting loudly.  Deadly thought his color indicated that he was angry.

Suddenly, the dragon spread his wings. They were five feet long and had spikes all over. They looked very, very sharp. The dragon had rough scales all over. He smelled super stinky too… like dead fish.

Then Deadly saw why. The dragon was eating dead fish.  Yuck! He did not like dead fish–not one bit. Fish had to taste like rotten cheese.

Deadly was determined to get past the dragon, into the cave and through the portal. He wanted to go someplace safe, someplace beautiful, someplace he loved. First, Deadly had to get rid of the dragon. He would trick him into thinking a pile of rocks in the distance was gold. He raised his hand and turned that pile into a sparkly gold pile.

The dragon looked at the pile and then looked at Deadly. He brought his talons up and blew a raspberry! It was a very silly face. Deadly had a feeling  his trick hadn’t worked.

Deadly had another plan. With a flick of his wrist he made a portal into a special world just for dragons. He thought this one would be happy there. He made it look as if there was a pile of fish just on the other side of the door!  This time his trick worked. The dragon lumbered over to the opening. He turned green as he did so. He walked through the portal and Deadly quickly closed it behind him.

“All Right!” Said Deadly.

He had gotten rid of the dragon. He marched into the cave. It was time to go to that most beautiful place. He couldn’t wait. Too bad that his own portal only went to a handful of other worlds. But now he would happily enter his favorite.

But then, there was a bright light and something came through the portal! It was the Dragon! But the dragon was green. Didn’t that mean he wasn’t mad?

“Why did you send me through the portal”  the dragon asked.

“Because I wanted to get to this portal?”

“Huh, why?”

“Because I wanted to see what a different world looked like. What’s your name, by the way?”

“I’m Spitfire!”

“Well, Spitfire, may I go through the portal?”

“Of course,” Spitfire said.  “Be my guest.”

Deadly walked through the portal. The dragon followed.

“Why?” Deadly asked. They stood on the edge of a cliff. It didn’t look any like the world Deadly had hoped for.

“Ha!” said the dragon. “I tricked you! This portal leads to a bad world and all it has is cliffs. Goodbye.”

The dragon grabbed him and threw him off the cliff.

Deadly, being a demi-god could fly, but this didn’t feel like it was a great place to be. Deadly flew to another cliff.

And ran into Bilbo the hobbit. He had a gold ring.

“Look,” Bilbo said. “This will make us invisible, we can sneak past the dragon!”

“That’s great,” said Deadly. “Let’s go!”

They snuck past the dragon and through the portal, but it wasn’t the cave.  It was the place that Deadly had wanted to go all along. Everything was grand. He hoped.

The End (maybe).
