The dragon guarded her cave. Sam, the bat, watched. The bat wondered what the dragon guarded.
The dragon was enormous—the biggest creature Sam had ever seen and she was blue like the sky. What a shocking sight! Spikes ran down the dragon’s back all the way to her tail, she was covered in feathers. Huh! That seemed a little strange since she had no wings. But that might mean she was related to birds and possibly even bats—hmmm.
Sam wasn’t sure he wanted to touch the dragon. Sure the feathers looked soft, but the dragon also had scaly skin and those spikes looked really sharp. They would hurt. The dragon smelled so good—like smoke, charcoal-y, heated smoke. The bat took a huge whiff.
He liked that she was quiet dragon. She barely rustled and even her breathing was soft and gentle.
The dragon started to eat fruits and berries. Gross… ick—too sweet. He refused to eat sugary garbage. Insects were the only way to fly!
Sam had a plan. As soon as the dragon fell asleep, he would sneak past her into the cave and discover what she guarded. He waited, but not for long. Soon after she ate, she crashed. Literally. She fell in a heap of sleep.
Sam started flying past her to the cave entrance. He flew for a long time because she was huge. As he made it to the opening, the dragon awoke with a start!
“Eeek!” said Sam. The dragon roared. Sam’s ears felt like they might explode! And her air pushed him back super far, all the way to where he had started.
Oh, no! Darn it. He was not giving up. He flew as fast as he could around the dragon’s back side. She didn’t see him. He flew into the cave! Whoo hoo! thought Sam.
The main cavern was huge, but empty. He decided to explore. He went down a small passageway and there, he saw something amazing. It was a gold piece. It was so shiny. Was this what the dragon guarded? He kind of didn’t think so. It didn’t seem like enough.
Hmm. He flew back to the main cavern. Had he missed something? And then he heard it. Mww. Mwww. Huh. What was that? It almost sounded like a baby bat. But not quite.
He used his echolocation and found a little fluffy fur ball at the opening of the cave. Ahhh! It was a little fluffy baby—not a bat and definitely not a dragon. But where was his mom? And why was the dragon guarding it?
Suddenly, Sam heard voices coming at him from everywhere in the cave. They sounded loud and scary. Ugh. Dragon minions! He scooped up the fluff ball with his little claws and rushed the dragon hoping to escape the cave. He had no idea if he would live to tell his tale.
Dun… Dun… Dun…
The “Cliffhanger” End.
