The Dragon’s Last Fight

The dragon guarded his cave. Da the fairy watched. She had to watch, because she was kidnapped!

The dragon guarded someone else too. A cat. Da’s best friend, Garfield. And this wasn’t just any old cat. Garfield was a very smart cat. He could even predict the future! Da was worried because the dragon wanted to keep the cat all to himself!

Da couldn’t believe how big the dragon was. He had to be at least one hundred times bigger than she was. To be fair, she was tiny. Even Garfield the Cat was much bigger than her—at least three feet tall. The dragon was a very dark green color. Da had never seen a dark green dragon before. Whereas she–the fairy–was a totally different color. She was pink! And Garfield was her favorite type of cat—he was all black!

The dragon spread his huge and very red wings! Some fairies have wings, but not Da. And no fairies had wings this big. The dragon had scales too. They were all over his body in the same dark green. He also had spines as red as his wings all over his back!

Da thought the dragon would feel very bumpy if she touched him. She was determined to escape which meant she might have to touch him in the future. But not just yet. Given all his spines too, the dragon had to be the bumpiest creature she could imagine.

Despite the dragon being a villainous kidnapper, she liked his smell. He was very sweet—like a huge, bumpy orange.

The dragon yawned, which sounded strangely like a chicken! Da had never heard a dragon yawn before. But she liked the sound of it, because a dragon yawning might be a dragon getting sleepy!

Garfield couldn’t stop pacing the floor of the cave. As he paced, he stepped on twigs and his force snapped them. Snap. Snap. Snap. It was a comforting sound to Da. It made her remember she wasn’t alone.

The dragon clawed some raw meat out of a pile and stuffed it into his mouth. He began to chew. Yum! Thought Da. She loved raw meat. So salty-delicious. And she was sooooo hungry.

Da came up with a plan. Since the dragon didn’t seem to be getting sleepy, she asked Garfield in cat language to distract the dragon. She would then escape to get help to save Garfield.

Garfield told her in “cat” that he predicted she was about to make a mistake.

Da insisted that she had to try. No matter what. So Garfield distracted the dragon. And Da was going to run. She really was. But Garfield’s prediction scared her. She hesitated. By the time she ran, the dragon was no longer distracted. He caught Da!!

Oh no!

But then Da noticed that Garfield had managed to slip out. Hooray! He escaped while she was distracting the dragon by getting caught. Good Garfield! Way to go!!

Da waited and waited while the dragon ate more and more raw meat!

Then Garfield exploded into the cave with a big and strong knight! She’d never seen him before but golly she was happy to! Surely, he would save the day.

But the dragon swooped up the knight and Garfield too! They were captured just like Da.

Oh no! What would happen next? Da had no idea if they would ever be saved! But she was determined to try to save them herself.

The “Cliffhanger” End.
