Rex and the Dragon

The dragon guarded his cave. Rex watched. He was a young boy—10 years old. He had never seen this dragon before. He wondered what was in the cave. What was the dragon guarding?

He thought the dragon was huge! He was half the size of the mountain. And he was bright red. His medium-sized wings were also as bright red as he was. He had spikes all over his back and also on the tip of his tail.

When the dragon flapped his wings, heat hit Rex right in the face. Whoa! And his flapping wings strummed like a ukulele. That must be how the heat was created. Rex really didn’t want to touch the dragon. He was very afraid that it would burn.

Rex sniffed the air. The dragon smelled like fried potatoes! He liked that smell. The dragon might be hot and ferocious, but he smelled delicious.

The dragon made a very high-pitched whistling sound–EEEEEeeeeeee. It was so high-pitched that he almost couldn’t hear it.

Suddenly, a new dragon appeared. This one was two-headed! He was just as big as the first dragon and he was eating an ice cream cone.

He said, “Hello! What is your favorite ice cream?”

Rex realized he was talking to him! “Uh… Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream?”

“Whoa,” said the dragon. “That’s what I’m eating. It’s my favorite too.” He went and got another cone for Rex from the ice cream van.

Rex licked his cone. He loved this flavor. It tasted like ice cream but with cookies in it! His favorite, sweet treat.

Even though the dragon was seemingly nice, Rex didn’t trust him. He didn’t know these dragons. However, he really was curious about what they were guarding. The two-headed dragon got an ice-cream cone for the first dragon. While they ate their ice cream and enjoyed each other’s company, Rex snuck toward the cave. He would creep inside.

But the two-headed dragon caught him! He grabbed him with his talons, and then stumped with him into the cave.

“You are out of line! We are protecting the entire world from the worst weapon of all. If used, it would destroy the planet and all who live here. How dare you try to sneak into our cave.”

“Wow!” said Rex. “That’s awesome! You dragons are heroes! I want to help. Can I be part of your guard crew?”

“That would be fantastic,” said the two-headed dragon. “My name is Cyborg! And my friend’s name is Firing. He doesn’t talk much. What’s your name?”

“My name is Rex!”

There was a huge rumbling outside of the cave. They all ran to see what was up.

Outside, was another huge dragon–a dark red one! He didn’t look very nice. The dragon breathed fire onto the rock next to the entrance. Rex jumped backward just in time. It was burning hot.

“Uh-oh!” yelled Cyborg. “A stranger!”

Firing made his very high-pitched EEEEeeeee sound.

“Attack!” yelled Cyborg. And they both attacked the new dragon.

Rex wasn’t sure what to think. It was clear that these dragons thought this new fire-breathing dragon was an enemy.

Cyborg yelled, “Firing, get your magic going!”

Firing whipped his tail and a protective shield appeared at the tip near the spike.

Oooh! thought Rex. It had to be magic!

Then Firing spoke for the first time. “Spikes BLOOM!” he said in a high-pitched squeal. And the spikes on his back began to glow with magical power.

Whoa! thought Rex. He was determined to help. He picked up a large stick and charged into the fray!

What would happen next? Would the dragons and Rex save the world by protecting the weapon in the cave?

Time would only tell…
