The Fox and the Dragon

The dragon guarded his cave.

Bubbles the fox watched. She had heard of this dragon, but she had never seen him before. She wondered what he was guarding.

The dragon was pretty big—at least 10 feet tall. He was as black as midnight. His black wings were medium-sized, and he had spikes all around his back and down his tail. He didn’t have horns, which surprised Bubbles. She thought that dragons always had horns.

Bubbles imagined that if she touched the dragon, he would feel sharp and rough like a shark’s skin. She thought it would feel like sandpaper. She sniffed the air. The dragon smelled strongly of roses. She loved that scent. It reminded her of when she and her family had gone on a picnic when she was quite young. It made her want to like the dragon.

The dragon was making a loud and ferocious noise.

ROAWR.

Bubbles worried that he had seen her and was roaring at her. In between roars, the dragon chewed on a hunk of cheese. Yuck, thought Bubbles. She hated the taste of cheese. It tasted just like spicy hot sauce, something she couldn’t abide.

Bubbles really wanted to get into the cave, and now she knew how she would do it. The dragon liked cheese, which was disgusting, but she could use it. She would throw cheese far from the cave and lure the dragon away. Then she would sneak inside and see what he was guarding.

She put her plan into action. She flung the cheese, as far as she possibly could. The dragon took the bait. He lumbered after the cheese. Meanwhile, Bubbles crept into the cave.

The first thing she noticed was how much darker it was in the cave. From sunlight to twilight just like that. The next thing she noticed was an egg as big as she was. It was red with orange spots.

Whoa! she thought. She had not expected this.

She crept closer to take a better look at the egg. But suddenly she heard someone behind her. She whirled around. It was another dragon. A young one. He looked a lot like the original dragon guarding the cave, only half his size.

She said, “Shhhhh! Don’t say a word!” She hoped that she could sneak away without the big dragon any the wiser.

But the new dragon began to screech. She didn’t understand what he was screeching, but she had the sense that he was calling for his dad.

Soon, the large black dragon poked his head into the cave. She was caught.

Just when Bubbles thought there was no hope, a large crack happened.

CRACK. CRACK. CRACK.

The egg hatched!

They all focused on the egg. A small, adorable dragon crawled out. She was red and orange with pink and blue hearts all over. Bubbles thought she was the cutest thing ever.

And much to Bubbles’ surprise, she spoke. Even more surprising, Bubbles understood her.

The adorable dragon said, “Hello World!”

The dragon son rushed over to the little baby dragon and hugged her. The two siblings together made Bubbles really happy.

Then the daddy dragon fully entered the cave and welcomed his new baby into the world.

Bubbles decided this was the perfect time to sneak away. She tiptoed on her little fox paws out of the cave. As soon as she was outside, she ran. She ran all the way home.

But suddenly she heard something. She looked over her shoulder–not that she had to. She knew the dragons were following her. The smell of roses was very strong.

She tried to hide, but it was no use. They were relentless. When they caught her, she cowered before them.

“Don’t be scared,” the baby dragon cried in her adorable, high-pitched voice. “We are your friends.”

Bubbles had never felt more relieved. She was incredibly happy too. Because she wanted to be friends with these dragons. She already loved the little baby one.

They became very good friends and enjoyed many good times together.

It was a very happy ending!

The End.
