The Dragon and the Boy

The dragon guarded her cave.  An eight-year-old boy watched. His name was Bob. He wondered what she guarded.

The dragon was huge – at least nineteen feet tall. She was fat and fluffy.  She was green, white, and yellow and she glowed.  Bob thought she glowed because it was nighttime.  Her wings were big, and spikes ran down her back. Those wings reminded Bob of fairy wings because they were transparent and had swirly designs all over.

Her skin was scaly, and despite her soft and fluffy appearance, they looked slimy. Bob thought the spikes were as sharp as a sewing needle.  The dragon had a thick horn on her snout that narrowed into a pointy, sharp tip.

She smelled delicious, just like a yummy steak.  Bob loved steak!  The dragon was making a horrible racket.  She sounded like a trumpet that was filled with water. Bob had the impression that she had seen him, but he didn’t think her weird music was aggressive, just lousy.  He had a feeling she wasn’t afraid of a 3rd grade boy in the least.

Maybe she was trying to communicate with someone.  He heard soft growling coming from inside the cave. Was she communicating with whoever was making that noise?

More than ever, he had to know what was in the cave.

Suddenly, the dragon stopped her racket and pulled out a chocolate sundae. She began to eat.

Yuck! Disgusting! Bob disliked sundaes. Chocolate tasted just like blue cheese to him, and it made him horribly sick.  He was allergic to chocolate.  He was so allergic that it made him sneeze very loudly.

The dragon looked his way.

Bob had a crazy idea.  He began to fake sneeze a lot.  The dragon couldn’t stop looking in his direction, but he hid behind a rock and kept sneezing.

Then he ran as fast as he could to the mountain side and began to climb the cave wall.  As he had hoped the dragon still looked where he had been sneezing.  His plan was working.

He climbed and climbed and finally saw a big hole into the cave.  He crawled inside. He ended up on a ledge looking down into the cave.  It was very dark.  It took his eyes a few seconds to adjust.  When he could see again, he saw a large maze made out of rocks.

Aha!  he thought.  I must go through the maze to discover the growling creatures that the dragon guarded.

Bob jumped into the maze.  The growls were louder and louder as he progressed through it.  The maze was hard.  He kept hitting dead ends.  But he did not give up. He had to know what was growling.  What did the dragon guard?

Finally he made it to the end of the maze, but there was nothing except another path.

He sighed.  He was tired.  Still, he was determined.  So he followed the path.  It went through a long tunnel.  The growls were really, really loud now.  He sneaked through, and on the other side, he finally saw them.

They were baby dragons.  Little mini-me versions of the dragon outside, with their green, white, and yellow skin that glowed and their fairy wings.  They were so cute.

When they saw him, they ran up to him and each gave him big hugs.  He realized that their growls were actually purrs.

They played games together and when the mama dragon finally showed up, she gave him a hug too.  It was the best day of Bob’s life and they all were friends forever!

They lived happily ever after.

The End.
