The dragon guarded her cave. Mr. Bear watched. He had never seen this dragon before. He wondered what she was guarding.
Mr. Bear wasn’t overly impressed by the dragon. Surely, she was bigger than him – maybe 40 feet tall whereas he was only around 10 feet tall. But he had seen bigger dragons. She was a very dark green. Her scales were a little different from what he expected. They were pointy and sharp-looking. He thought it would be a good idea not to touch them. She had a huge wingspan and dark brown eyes. Despite the sharp scales, her skin looked soft.
She was singing and her voice was beautiful, like Adele’s – the one singer he had heard because she threw a concert near his forest. The bear raised his head and sniffed. The dragon smelled like daisies, one of his favorite scents – a combination of sweet and bitter.
For some reason, screams came from the cave. They were loud and high pitched. Mr. Bear thought that there were creatures fighting in the cave. The dragon stopped singing. With her talons she picked up a hunk of raw meat and began to eat it. Mr. Bear wished he had some. It looked delicious – salty – just what he liked.
Mr. Bear was determined to see what was inside the cave. Using trees and large boulders as cover, he snuck to the backside of the cave. Quickly he dug a tunnel into the cave. He squeezed inside.
The cave was very dark. He saw nothing, but he still heard the screaming and it seemed closer than before. With his keen hearing, he heard the sound of footsteps behind him. He lumbered around. A man stood by the tunnel he had just dug. The man carried a large net. The man used his hands to show Mr. Bear that he meant him no harm. He was hunting for something else.
Suddenly, the bear heard a huge stomp. When he turned back toward the cave, the dragon was there, her wings out. She breathed orange and yellow fire. She looked mad. Mr. Bear was scared. The fire was very hot. He pushed past the man and crawled out of the cave. Immediately, the dragon flew out of the cave. She landed in front of him.
She said softly, “Stop coming into my cave.”
Then from the forest, a woman approached. She asked, “Have you seen my husband?”
The dragon said, “He is in the back of the cave.”
At that moment, four baby dragons flew out of the cave entrance.
“Oh!” thought Mr. Bear. That was what was in the cave. That was what the dragon guarded.
He thought the man might be chasing them, but he didn’t think the dragons were scared. They looked as if they were playing tag.
The mama dragon flew over to her babies. She landed and called, “Come to me, little ones. Sit behind me.” They did as they were told.
Mr. Bear wondered if she was distracted enough for him to now sneak away her raw meat. He decided to try. He tiptoed to the cave entrance and grabbed a chunk with his claws.
He heard the man in the cave say, “I’m going to get you, baby dragons, and I’m going to steal you away.”
Mr. Bear didn’t like the sound of that at all. No one should steal a mama’s babies. He ran into the cave roaring and grabbed the man by his collar. He pushed him out of the cave.
Growling, he said, “Never come back!”
The man ran faster than Mr. Bear had ever seen a man run, and his wife ran after him. In gratitude, the dragon let Mr. Bear come into her cave, and they had a big party. Yay!
The End.
