Katie the Dragon and her Mother Dragon

The dragon guarded her cave. Her mom watched. She loved her daughter, Katie, very much. She wondered what Katie guarded.

She was still a little angry about their fight. It had been over a month, but they hadn’t gotten over it.  She was so confused. And now she was very curious. Her daughter had never guarded her cave before.

By now, Mom felt as if Katie should have apologized. After all she had been trying to protect their kingdom. Katie should have agreed not to ever have a baby, or at least to wait till Mom retired from her queenly duties. There had been a clear prophecy that told that if Katie had a baby, it would take over the kingdom. She hoped that Katie hadn’t done anything rash like having a baby.

Despite her lingering anger, Mom couldn’t help but think how beautiful her Katie was. She was a water-elemental dragon, unlike Mom whose element was fire. Mom adored Katie’s dark green and the clouds that hovered overhead raining on her always. Mom had fiery horns instead and she was fire red. Their wings were quite different too. Mom’s  were fire red and constantly aflame. But Katie’s were an ocean blue and were two waterfalls with a sheet of water constantly tumbling down. Mom blew fire, a rich stream of flame, but Katie blew water as if she were a hose.

How could they be so different? Mom wondered.

Mom missed hugging Katie. She was so soft and smooth, and her water calmed Mom’s flame which was sort of nice. She was all sharp edges and hard scales. Katie’s soft gentle water was soothing.

She loved Katie’s smell. Katie smelled like the beach – salty and sandy. It was very refreshing.

However all of that rushing water, the constant sounds that Katie made were super irritating. Water sounds made Mom completely insane.

All this time, Mom had been watching Katie from behind a grove of trees. This small forest stood between her and Katie and the cave. She was not ready to reveal herself to Katie.

Suddenly, there was a rustling in the forest, something in the bushes. She flinched. What was that?

She also heard chewing coming from the cave and there was the strong and sweet smell of fruit, the type dragons loved best. Yummy. She was just crazy for that sweet fruit treat. She felt very hungry.

But what or who was in the cave and what or who was rustling in the bushes? It was time to find out! She was determined to sneak into the cave, not to hurt anyone but just to figure out what was going on.

She called out to her daughter, “Katie, look at that bird!”

Katie’s eyes grew round. “Mom! What are you doing here?”

Mom decided to go on the offense because she had the horrible feeling that Katie might have done the worst possible thing. “Katie! Did you have a baby?”

“No! I did not have a baby! I adopted a baby!”

Oh no! Mom thought. An adopted baby was still a baby that Katie had. This could be a part of the prophecy! “How could you be so inconsiderate? My kingdom could be destroyed because of you and that baby!”

Flame came out of her nostrils and her fiery horns grew into an inferno of flame. Just then the little baby dragon crawled out of the cave. She was sooo cute. She was a little water dragon. Awww.

“I want to hug her,” Mom said.

“No way,” said Katie and she leapt in front of her baby. But the baby crawled around Katie and jetted water directly in Mom’s face.

“OMG! How cute! She’s adorable!”

All of a sudden, a sentient watermelon rolled out from the bushes. He was golden.

“My name is Bob!” He grabbed the baby.

Both Katie and her mom shrieked. The baby wrestled with the watermelon and broke free.

But then the watermelon transformed with a loud crack into a lightning elemental dragon. He grabbed the baby in his talons and shot into the air. He disappeared in a flash of lightning.

What were they going to do now?
