Prince Charming and the Dragon

The dragon guarded her cave.  Prince Charming watched.  He had no idea what the dragon guarded.

He knew Anya the dragon well. She was a very silly dragon, which he didn’t much like, because he was serious. She also was weirdly unique. She was shiny black with white stripes. One of a kind. She was tall – at least thirty feet – but that was just so-so for a dragon. He had many dragon friends who were taller.

She had tiny, dark blue wings and large spikes that ran down her back. He knew all too well how sharp those spikes were. He’d been cut by one of her spikes and had the scar to prove it. Her skin was smooth and cold like a lizard’s.

Anya always stank like sewage, which was a totally gross odor as far as Prince Charming was concerned – not charming at all. Right now, Anya was huffing loudly and when she puffed, she puffed fire. In fact, just a second ago, she puffed fire and burned down a tree. He much preferred her typical snoring over this dangerous puff.

Suddenly, he heard a scream – a high-pitched, terrified scream, coming from the cave. He’d heard that scream before.

Oh no! It was his dear, beloved Smoochie Princess! They were engaged. He had to save her.

Meanwhile, Anya was munching on the burnt leaves of the torched tree. Yuck. Eating burnt leaves would be as bad as eating his dad’s cooking – disgusting, like eating a burnt popsicle stick.

He decided that he would attempt to trick Anya into leaving the entrance.

He stepped out into the open. “Hey Anya,” he said. “How’s it going? Uh, I had the thought that you might want a bath. I know how much you love them. There’s a lake just around the corner. Let me guard your cave while you indulge yourself.”

Anya tipped her head and considered. “All right! That’s a brilliant idea!”

She lumbered off, and Prince Charming snuck into the cave. It was very dark, but in the middle of the cave, there was a stick burning bright. Next to the stick was a dragon egg.

“Smoochie,” he whispered.

He stepped forward and suddenly slid and fell on his back. What? He realized that the cave that once had been dirt and rocks now was cold ice. Anya must have done something to it!

“Prince Charming,” Smoochie said, coming out of the shadows. “What are you doing here?”

“I’m saving you! You screamed!”

“I screamed because Anya’s tail touched me, and it sort of scared me. I didn’t know at first what it was. But I’m here to help this egg hatch. I don’t need saving.”

Anya poked her head in the cave. “That was a very small lake,” she said. “Hey, Prince Charming, thanks for coming to help with my egg.”

Prince Charming decided he shouldn’t lie. “Well, actually I didn’t come to help. I came to take Smoochie back to the castle.”

Anya roared, “Ohhh! How could you!”

Prince Charming realized she was very mad at him. He ran out of the cave. She followed. She huffed and puffed and suddenly the forest was on fire.

Prince Charming turned to Anya. “Wait! If you have an egg, who’s the daddy?”

Just then, a dragon flew overhead and landed nearby. He was three times as big as Anya.

“Who wants to know?” he asked.

Prince Charming thought about getting to know this new dragon, but then he realized that the fire was heading towards his kingdom.

He yelled as loudly as he could. “Guards! Help! Fire!”

They rushed to help. There was a loud crack from inside the cave and a baby dragon wandered out of the cave.

“Oh no,” bellowed the daddy dragon. “My baby! The cave! The fire! I’ll go find water!” He raced off but came back within minutes. “No water!”

Instead he started to spit at the fire. And it worked. As he spit, portions of the fire went out.

Meanwhile the guards arrived with their gear to help put out the fire.

“Oh no,” cried Anya. “Our baby is sweating.”

She and the daddy started running around in circles. They were so anxious.

Smoochie ran out of the cave. “I must save the baby. I will use the old blood magic.”

She stabbed her arm with a spike and squirted her blood towards the forest, but it did not work the way she had hoped. Instead the fire grew bigger!

Everyone fighting the fire decided that stopping the fire was more important than saving Smoochie. They ran to the forest. Only Prince Charming remained behind. He ran to Smoochie.

Her blood ran freely and soaked the burnt leaves. Then a miracle happened. As the blood and the leaves combined, the fire went out completely.

The people roared with joy. Smoochie was so excited she kissed the ground, but managed to kiss burnt leaves, which burnt her lips.

The End.
