The dragon guarded her cave. Ralph, the dragon, watched. He knew her. She was Shelie. Ralph was sure she guarded precious jewels, and he wanted them.
Shelie was a bit smaller than him and a completely different color. Where he was neon red, she was turquoise, but her scales were orange. Ralph’s scales were yellow. He thought her scales looked flimsy–not even close to as hard as his.
Shelie smelled different from him–good but not quite good as he did. He smelled like moldy dinosaur dung–the best smell in the world. She smelled like roses and the sweetest ocean water.
Shelie sat as silent as a mouse, and Ralph was being very still as well. All he could hear was a whistling wind.
All of a sudden, another dragon showed up on the horizon. He was larger than Ralph and Shelie and neon green. Ralph had never seen him before. The new dragon was picking up creepy crawlers and eating them. Ick! Ralph would never eat those. They had a disgusting sour goo in the middle. Totally gross.
Ralph decided to rush his plan to steal the treasure before the stranger arrived. He grabbed a bunch of ladybugs–they tasted so much sweeter than creepy crawlies. He threw them at Shelie. He was sure she would go after them and then the treasure would be his.
But his planned failed. She didn’t follow the ladybugs. She stayed put. He noticed she had a pile of berries near her belly. Maybe that’s why she didn’t leave.
“Ralph!” she yelled, finally seeing him. “Why are you here?”
Before Ralph could answer, the stranger leapt in front of them. “Hand over your babies,” he said to Shelie. “I’m hungry and I want to eat them.”
“Never!” cried Shellie. “I will guard them with my life!”
Ralph couldn’t believe it. She wasn’t guarding treasure. She was guarding her babies!
“Help me, Ralph!” Shelie threw herself at the stranger and ripped his snout with her talon. His snout started to bleed.
“Owww! Why’d you have to hurt me?” The stranger ran away.
Ralph and Shelie became friends again. The babies grew up to have a very happy life.
The End.
