The Phoenix and the Dragon

The dragon guarded her cave. Rachel the phoenix watched. She had never seen the dragon before. She wondered what the dragon guarded.

The dragon was huge. She was exactly twenty and a half times bigger than Rachel.  The dragon was a shiny black with grayish-brown scales. She had black wings–even blacker than her body.

Rachel was sure that the dragon’s scales would be super-hot and rough. The dragon stank–just like poop. It made Rachel feel faint. She wished she could spritz her with perfume. Instead, she spritzed herself so she didn’t have to smell the stinky poop.  The dragon snored–really, really, really loud. It hurt Rachel’s eardrums, but she was glad the dragon slept.

While she decided on her next step, Rachel munched on crunchy chips. They were her favorite–mostly sour with a hint of spice.

When Rachel finished her chips, she went into action. She started to very quietly fly past the sleeping dragon into the cave. When she got to the opening, suddenly the dragon awoke with a roar. Rachel tried to fly away, but the large dragon cornered her.

The dragon farted really loud. Ack! It stank. Rachel tried desperately to escape but the dragon farted again and the power of her fart pushed Rachel right into the cave. The horrible stench made her feel faint. She began to fall and landed on something smooth and round. That was the last thing she remembered. She fainted.

When she came to, she was in a very dark space. She thought she might still be in the cave, but far deeper inside. She could still smell the dragon, but the creature seemed far away. She heard rushing water.

Hmmm. She knew she had fainted. She knew she had fallen on something round and smooth. If she had to guess, she would guess a dragon egg. But nearby, in the dark, she heard and smelled other creatures. As her eyes adjusted to the dark, she saw many creatures tied up. That was when she noticed she was tied up too.

Oh no!

Rachel whispered to the creatures, “Play dead when the dragon appears.  When she gets close, I will explode into ash and then rise again. With my fire, the dragon will be vanquished.”

They heard the dragon closing in on them.  As soon as she arrived, Rachel exploded.  Fire was everywhere. She rose and called the others to her. She magicked their bonds away. With her help, they flew to a small window in the ceiling of the cave. It was closed, but she quickly opened it. She and the others burst out of the cave and closed the window behind them.

The dragon tried to follow, but she was too big and still fighting Rachel’s fire. She couldn’t reach them! At least not yet.

Would the dragon use another exit to follow?
