The Dragon and the Warrior

The dragon guarded her cave. Steve, the warrior, watched.  He’d never seen a dragon before. He wondered what the dragon guarded.

The dragon was dark gray.  Steve crossed his arms and looked up at the dragon who was the same size as the mountain and said, “That’s big.”

The dragon had spikes down her back, horns, scales all over and red eyes. Hmmm. She was scarier than he had expected. He wanted to run away, but a warrior never ran. He would stay and fight. But he would definitely avoid touching her because her scales looked very rough and her spikes were extremely spiky.

The dragon smelled strongly of the cave – like dirt, mushrooms, and musty stuff. He didn’t mind the smell. It seemed normal for a dark gray scaly dragon. What he did mind was the noise. The dragon was screaming like a goat – over and over again. He really wished she would stop. And just like that, the dragon did stop screaming. Instead, she started to eat bones – lots and lots of crunchy bones – like they were corn chips. Yuck! Gross! Steve thought eating bones would be like eating or drinking bone juice. Bleck!

Steve decided to wait till the dragon fell asleep and then sneak past her into the cave. Then he would see what she guarded.

Soon after she ate many many bones, she fell into a deep sleep.  Steve knew how to be stealthy. He snuck past her and into the cave.  She did not even move. It was very dark in the cave. He pulled out his torch and lit it.  He gasped! Uh-oh. Another dragon was there – just as big and just as gray. It was the dragon’s mate. And, he was wide awake.

“I’m going to kill you,” bellowed the dragon.

Steve went into action. He waved his torch to confuse the dragon. He ran straight at the monster and under his belly, through his legs, sliding behind him. And on the other side was a basket.

A basket of wands. Magic wands!

Oh-ho! he thought. MAGIC! He grabbed a wand, pointed at the dragons and chanted, “Tiny, tiny, make them tiny.”

POOF! POOF again!

The huge as mountains dragons were as small as rats!  “WOOOOHOOO!” yelled the Steve the warrior.

The boy rat scurried up to him. “ I was just kidding. I don’t want to kill you. I want to help you,” he squeaked.

“Help?” asked the warrior.

“Yes, we can help you learn the magic of the wands.”

“Well, that is mighty kind of you,”  Steve said.

The two very tiny dragons scurried up to him and into the basket.

“Let me show you the most important thing about the wands,” said the girl dragon.  She jumped into the basket and screeched, “Change. Us. Back.” And POOF! Poof! Two huge dragons loomed.

Uh-oh Steve knew he’d made a giant mistake. “It’s cool,” he said, and then he ran…

Dun… Dun… Dun…
